File this under: things you didn't know you needed but do..
:) It's an "alfresco bowl cover" to keep flies, etc. off your covered dishes at picnics or cookouts. I saw this a couple of years ago on a blog (was it Sew, Mama, Sew maybe??) but have modified it to use laminated cotton on one side to make it easily wipe-able.
I also use whatever I have around for the weighted corners...in this case covered buttons. I've also used beads or little bolts. You can make a few of these covers out of 1/2 yard of laminated cotton and 1/2 yard of regular quilt weight cotton.
Supplies: laminated cotton, cotton, buttons to be covered, ric rac (these supplies can be modified based on what you have on hand)
You just cut an equal-sized square from each fabric and attach your "hanging thing" from your ribbon, ric rac or whatever you've chosen and position and pin it in the corner (right sides of fabric together).
Right sides pinned together, the covered buttons attached to ric rac are tucked in the corner - be aware of them as you sew around.
After a simple straight stitch all the way around (leaving a 2-3 inch gap for turning), turn it right side in and top stitch all the way around. It's ready!
See...imagine that bowl filled with messy guacamole - no worries - the laminated cotton wipes clean. ;)
